MPC committed to conserving Australia’s wild macadamias

Local business Macadamia Processing Company (in conjunction with its partners Pacific Gold Macadamias and Macadamia Marketing International) has extended its ongoing commitment to conserving Australia’s wild macadamias with a generous donation for the fourth consecutive year.

The donation will be used by the Macadamia Conservation Trust to locate and protect wild macadamias in their natural habitat and tap into their genetic diversity.

“Äustralia is the home of the macadamia nut and the only country where macadamias are found in the wild,” says the Macadamia Conservations Trust’s Denise Bond.

“We are therefore in the enviable position of being at the cutting edge of the global macadamia industry.

“Having access to our macadamia trees in the wild means we are exclusively placed to tap into their genetic diversity. This gives our macadamia nuts the best chance of adapting to changes in weather patterns, emerging pests and diseases and improvements to kernel recovery and quality.

MPC’s general manager Steve Lee says the decision to support the initiative was an easy one.

“It is absolutely vital that our industry has future access to untapped genetic diversity by finding ways to conserve the remnant wild macadamias,” says Mr. Lee.

“Whilst over 80% of wild macadamia trees have been lost since European settlement, a lot is now being done by the Macadamia Conservation Trust to secure their future. And we are excited to play a role in protecting the macadamia species.”

The MCT presented MPC general manager Steve Lee with a wild Macadamia tetraphylla, or “Bush Nut” which will be planted at the processing plant to show visitors an example of Australia’s wild macadamia.

The aim is to eventually have one of each the four macadamia species growing at the plant.

Macadamia tetraphylla, or “Bush Nut” is the species of macadamia local to the Northern Rivers. It was found throughout the Big Scrub and is now as rare as its rainforest habitat.

The Macadamia Conservation Trust is the only organisation in the world dedicated to protecting the unique macadamia species. It was created by our industry because we want to take our environmental responsibilities seriously and are passionate about the protection and conservation of wild macadamias trees in their native habitat, as well as ongoing research and education.
