2013 Australian macadamia crop reaches 35,200 tonnes in-shell

With deliveries to processors almost complete, the Australian Macadamia Society has announced a final crop of 35,200 tonnes in-shell for 2013.

Damage from the widespread January storms was more severe than anticipated.  The September forecast of 36,500 tonnes was based on early deliveries.  These dropped off once the orchard clean-up had been completed.

Some 5,000 tonnes were sold as in-shell leaving 30,200 tonnes in-shell processed which equated to 8,400 tonnes of kernel.

The figure is provided by the Australian Macadamia Society (AMS) based on actual factory receipts of the Australian Macadamia Handlers Association (AMHA).  Members account for over 90% of all macadamia handling in Australia.

“Given the extreme weather conditions experienced for much of the harvest season, this result is a testament to the perseverance of our growers” says AMS CEO Jolyon Burnett.  “The better than expected kernel recoveries show how hard processors worked to get the best from the short crop and meet the strong market demand”.

“Nevertheless, there is very little inventory uncommitted and limited product in supply chains” said Burnett.
